CANADIAN MUSLIMS HOLD POTENTIAL SWING VOTE POWER IN MORE THAN 100 RIDINGS
"SPEAK WITH YOUR VOTE ON OCTOBER 14," CIC URGES -
"NOT VOTING IS NEGATIVE VOTING."
As campaign issues intensify in the lead-up to the October 14 Federal Election, the Canadian Islamic Congress is urging its members, supporters and friends to vote.
The organization has provided a full information table for more than 100 ridings where Muslims hold a potentially powerful swing vote, ranging between 2% to 14%.
In the 2006 election some candidates won by fewer than 200 votes. The CIC issued a key position paper last week covering top national and international election issues.
"We urge Imams and Muslim leaders to encourage all eligible voters to cast their votes. Not voting is negative voting," said today’s CIC action alert.
"Moreover, this week’s Eid prayers and festivities are all excellent platforms from which to send the message that voting is a civic duty as well as a religious one," the statement concluded.
